Installing VirtualBox on Ubuntu 7.04

Post by ettienne »

I am new to Linux, I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 7.04 this morning and am trying to get VirtualBox installed.
The first install attempt ran for about 3 hours when I decided that nothing was going on and X'ed out of the install. I rebooted and downloaded the VB install again in case the first one was bad.
Now when I try to run the install I get the message "Only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time. Please close the other application e.g. 'Update Manager', 'aptitude' or 'Synaptic' first."

OK, this is all pretty meaningless to me. How do I figure out what needs to be done to get the ball rolling again?

OK, so I reinstalled Ubuntu and loaded all the updates, then downloaded VirtualBox and started the install again.
The install seems to be waiting for me to agree to the user license.
How the hell do I click the OK so the install can continue?

Thanks, that was intuitive.
So I got past the PUEL and then the install craps out and tells me it cannot access the .deb file.
What a load of crap, what now?

When I try to run the install again from a difference location I am back to square 1 as in my first post :"Only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time. Blah, blah, blah"

Jeez, what must one do to get something installed?
In Windows you click, install, done.

Looks like you have a lock file that is generating the error when trying to install VB . Try to open Synaptic or Adept and then close it to see if the lock file is released and then try to reinstall VB.
Also I recommend to post in Ubuntu forums, you will get probably more hints

Unless you are used to Linux systems maybe it would be better to set up everything except the VB and let it settle a bit and come back to it later.

Having said that, if you look in Applications>System tools you'll probably find that it installed. What it was complaining about I think is that you hadn't set up a vdi file to hold the new virtual machine. it was a glitch i noticed as well in VB.

It is very easy to set up, or was for me, and works pretty well, but it is not intuitive, except in a Linux way.

I ran into the same problem when trying to install this on Ubuntu. Here what I did to get it installed:
1/ reboot your computer
2/ run this to repair dpkg: dpkg --configure -a
3/ run this to force remove the corrupt installation: sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq virtualbox
4/ then try to install it again.

Hope it heps. this worked for me..
cheers

Here is how I installed it eventually:

1. Installed Automatix (www.getautomatix.com)
2. Open Automatix, selected VirtualBox and installed

That was easy, much easier than trying to figure out all the sudo stuff.
