OK, so we're changing direction off of Guest Additions and now trying to get the USB stick into the VM.
There is a link posted above toward the beginning about USB, please follow it and note post # 8 if you cannot succeed.

People in this world are too "I am owed everything, everyone else owes me all their time". I will not feed into this entitled behavior. So, No, I posted it once, I don't chew my cabbage twice, I will not post it again.
This forum is supported by unpaid volunteer free-Virtualbox users, of which you are one. So you need to do your own due diligence, too. Go look for it. Hint, since you're going the USB route now, it's going to have something to do with USB, and it's on the first page of this topic.

Re: Ubuntu VM how to access shared folder on iMAC
@scottgus1, I've been having another go at trying to progress, reading through the link and information you posted. I'm not making to much progress, for the parameters on VBoxManage, I'm not sure where to get that infromation so I don't know what I should be trying.
Some of the information mentions sharedname and mountpoint, I'm not sure I have that information or how or where to get it from.

The link I suggested doesn't make any references to "sharedname" or "mountpoint". Did you look through the first page of this topic for a link that explains the basics of USB and how to troubleshoot it?
