Re: No USB devices connected
I had a permissions issue as well. I seemed to have fixed it this way, maybe it will help you as well.
1) I added my current user to the "vboxusers" group
$ sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers mycurrentusername
2) I completely shutdown Virtualbox
3) I downloaded the correct Virtualbox Extentions pack for my version of Virtualbox (it was not the newest version because I'm using my distros version of vbox)
4) With Virtualbox shutdown, I double-clicked on the *.vbox-extpack file, instead of trying to install through the program's menu. It asked about "reinstalling" the Extension pack and I said yes, and after that it was recognizing the USB devices without root permissions needed.
I hope this helps, maybe try variations of this, by reinstalling that ext pack in as many ways as you can think

Re: No USB devices connected
Jimy, thanks very much for your input!
fantomframe, seing that your "sudo vboxmanage list usbhost" found devices, but regular "vboxmanage list usbhost" did not, I would recommend that you try Jimy's method.
It appears to revolve around installing the Extension Pack by double-clicking it with all Virtualbox windows closed, instead of through the main Virtualbox window's File menu Preferences.
Also, double-check that the command Jimmy used to add the user account to the group is the same command you used.
Uninstall the Extension Pack via the main Virtualbox window's File menu Preferences.
Reboot your host so no Virtualbox processes are running.
Doubleclick the Extension Pack download and follow the install method that is presented. (Match the EP version to the Virtualbox version.)
try regular non-sudo, "vboxmanage list usbhost".

Re: No USB devices connected
I followed both of yours instructions, reinstalled, uninstalled rebooted and installed again, installed by command line, any combination i could think of and still no usb devices.
I also verified the extension pack and verified that I used the correct command for adding myself to vboxusers.
The usb devices came up for the first day and disappeared the next day and haven't shown since. This is a new OS install along with all the software I need.
Keep the suggestions coming, I really need windows to run a specific piece of software I use.
Thank you to those trying to help.

Re: No USB devices connected
What were you un/reinstalling? If Virtualbox, then the Extension Pack does not get uninstalled when Virtualbox gets uninstalled, at least on Windows hosts. Likely on Linux too.fantomframe wrote:reinstalled, uninstalled rebooted and installed again, installed by command line,
Please confirm that you uninstalled the Extension Pack from within the main Virtualbox window's File menu Preferences, rebooted, then before any other Virtualbox windows were opened, you double-clicked the Extension Pack download file and let the ensuing install take place, per Jimy's instructions.

Re: No USB devices connected
Sorry, I am talking about the extension pack. I am still using the same OS and virtualbox install all this time. I followed the instructions you provided and also tried different combinations of uninstalling, reinstalling and rebooting. Virtualbox still says there are no usb devices.

Re: No USB devices connected
OK, I think we're going to have to drop back and punt. From this:
Can you please try plain ordinary Ubuntu Desktop (not Lubuntu or Xubuntu or Server). Please let the automatic installer do everything, partitions, permissions, don't do any of the normal stuff you'd usually do when installing an OS. Do the apt-get update and upgrade only, don't change any permissions. Then uninstall the forked Virtualbox and install official Virtualbox. Add your user account to the group.
Now try the 'vboxmanage list usbhost' command, non-sudo. What do you get?
I gather that you are not averse to changing the host operating system, or at least switching the host drive to allow a test of a different OS.fantomframe wrote:Moved from mxlinux to linux lite same problem

Re: No USB devices connected
So I like beating my head against the wall
I reinstalled xubuntu along with virtualbox and the programs I use (except for Dropbox)
Virtualbox is seeing the usb devices I have plugged in, yeah.
I installed Win7pro, my software for work and the security dongle, again yeah.
The only unusual part is that Win7 will only use USB2 not USB3, don't know why. I do have Guest additions installed.
Just to reiterate, Win7, software and Security dongle are all working in Virtualbox at the time I am writing this.

Re: No USB devices connected
The most likely reason IMHO is because Win7 out of the box doesn't know USB3 from Adam, and you haven't installed the Intel xHCI drivers to fix it.fantomframe wrote: The only unusual part is that Win7 will only use USB2 not USB3, don't know why.
Interesting, but the GAs have nothing to do with USB support. It requires an extension pack matching the VirtualBox version.fantomframe wrote: I do have Guest additions installed.

Re: No USB devices connected
I have learned a little more about my usb devices not showing or disappearing.
I have/had this problem on mxlinux, linux lite and xubuntu.
I have figured out the usb devices in virtualbox disappear when dropbox is running.
Still going through different scenarios, but so far when I stopped dropbox from running on start , reboot the computer and check virtualbox the usb devices reappear. I shut virtuabox off, start dropbox and restart virtualbox, the usb devices disappear again.
Is this a known issue with dropbox and virtualbox?
Any info would help.

Re: No USB devices connected
It would seem as long as Dropbox is not running the USB devices appear in Virualbox
Once I start Dropbox whether syncing or paused syncing the USB devices disappear in virtualbox.
At least I know when and why the USB devices disappear, just don't know if anything can be done to fix it.......

Re: No USB devices connected
I have not heard of conflicts between Dropbox and Virtualbox USB. See if your Dropbox setup is set to scan or synchronize USB drives? or has some kind of USB filter on it too?
Only thing I could sugggest to have a hope of fixing this is to make a post on the Bugtracker, with a guest vbox.log and a VboxSVC.log running a guest while Dropbox is enabled, then another set of logs while Dropbox is disabled. And a lonk back to this topic.
