Do I need to increase the amount of storage in the newly created VM, or increase the amount of Ram, please?

You have not initialised your VM disk. You are currently trying to install macOS onto the CD image that contains the installer. That wont work.

Exit the Installer, and then use Disk Utility to format your virtual disk. Just imagine you have added a brand new unformatted disk to a real machine - it's the same process. There are any number of web sites that describe how to install macOS if you have never done it before. Apples own site is not bad.

I think you can do this without exiting the installer. In the screenshots showing the macOS Installer, there is a menu called Utilities, and I can nearly see the Disk Utility hiding within.

I thought I had already done this? I'm following the User Guide, No. 5 on page 9:

This creates an unformatted disk - until you create a file system (with Disk Utility) the macOS Installer will not see it.

As @fth0 pointed out, you will find Disk Utility by following the menus.

I have created an APFS volume on my HD via Disk Utility.

Could you explain how I get the installer to see it, please?

When your boot your VM from the ISO installer, one of the options you will see in the very first window is to run Disk Utility. Is this the Disk Utility that you ran?

You should then see two disks listed. One of them will be the ISO disk that you just booted with - this is NOT the one you should try to format. The other disk is the virtual drive you created and attached to your VirtualBox virtual machine. This disk IS the one you should add a file system to.

After adding a file system to this disk, exit Disk Utility and proceed with macOS installer. The newly formatted disk should then be available as an install target.

No. I was following your suggestion:

use Disk Utility to format your virtual disk.

I read up about formatting & created an APFS volume via Disk Utility, on my HD.

Now, when I boot up the VM, this is what I see:

Good - you are making progress. The virtual drive is attached to your VM and is visible to the installer. You now need to select 'VBOX HARDDISK Media' (this is the virtual drive you created) and then select 'Erase' from the toolbar.

When the dialog comes up:

1. Set the name of the drive from 'Untitled' to 'Macintosh HD" (without the quotes)
2. Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
3. Scheme: GUID Partition map

Then click the 'Erase' button

On completion, exit disk utility then try to install macOS. Hopefully this time your newly formatted drive will be visible.

Excellent! Followed your instructions & got the new OS installed. Thank you. Then I downloaded the Tassman (synth) which is the whole point of this exercise. The screen image is a little distorted ( circular images appear slightly ovoid) & I can’t get sound just yet! But mainly I can’t figure out how to close down & get back to my main HD.

You should be able to exit the VM by using Apple Menu/Shut Down ...
Make sure that you are using the Guest OS menubar and not the one belonging to the Host when you do this.
