Without knowing the error message, I have read that the SHA hashing that is used to authenticate files has advanced beyond what Vista can do. I don[t remember if there was a fix using 6.1.14's Guest Additions or at what version the problem started, but I think t was pretty recent.

Since Vista has lost 3D acceleration from 6.1.x onward, you might try earlier Guest Additions. See earlier versions of 6.1.x or 6.0.x at https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ Download the Guest Additions ISO and install it through the guest's CD drive.

It worked by installing version 6.0.x of VirtualBox.
