VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi

Post by Ron Kern »

I received an error when attempting to run VirtualBox 3.2.4-62467 on my Windows 10 computer that it won't run because of security issues. When I attempt to upgrade the VirtualBox software to any new version including 6.1.14-140239 I get the same error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package:
'VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi' in the box below.

I have searched my computer and the web for the file "VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi" with no luck.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

First, try to reinstall or repair version 4.2.36 (search for VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi on google, there's only one result to the Virtualbox old builds page)
If that works, then try upgrading to 6.1.14

Thanks for the suggestion, however, I can't find "VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi" searching on the web. Do you have a link to where I can get that file? I tried installing versions:

VirtualBox-4.2.36-104064-Win
VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431-Win
VirtualBox-5.2.44-139111-Win
VirtualBox-6.1.14-140239-Win

When I do so, I get the same error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package:
'VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi' in the box below.

I tried reinstalling my installed version: VirtualBox-3.2.4-62467-Win

And I get the error message initially and then finishes with "Oracle VM VirturalBox 3.2.4 -- The older version of Oracle VM VirtualBox 3.2.4 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." And then installation error 1603.

That's a Windows installer (MSI) problem, not a VirtualBox problem. It wants access to the installer from the old software, presumably so it can be uninstalled properly. You should always keep the installers around for currently installed software.

The exe installers are wrappers around the MSI files. There are instructions in the manual for how to extract the MSI files.

3.2.4 can't be your current installed version of VirtualBox. If that was true then MSI would be asking for the 3.2.4 MSI: VirtualBox does not support a mix of versions on one PC, because there is only one set of support drivers. There have been third party hacks of the VirtualBox open sources (portable VirtualBox, BlueStacks Android emulator), it's possible that you have one of those, and in that case the rules may be different: but we don't support or make concessions for third party forks here.

And of course: none of these versions being discussed have been supported for quite some time.

Not to mention that there was a major change in guest format between version 3 and 4, so any guests that were made in version 4 will not be usable in version 3.

Thanks for the replies.

I resolved the problem by:

I gave up on Google searching for: VirtualBox-4.2.36-r104064-MultiArch_amd64.msi and used DuckDuckGo and it aimed me at the file. I still had an issue when I pointed it at 4.2.6-r104064 file wanting the newer version 4.2.6-r82780. Once I downloaded that things went smoothly and I could just install version 6.1.14.

6.1.14 found my Windows 95 virtual machine but won't run in normal mode. It will run in Safe mode. Another project!
