Uninstall / Reinstall issues

Post by oddsball »

I have been using virtualbox for the last few weeks with no issues , running Kali Linux and BeeBox.
A few days ago I did "something" and they stopped loading. I uninstalled them and tried to reinstall them but the new Kali install froze and crashed. I tried to delete this failed installation but I kept getting error messages. No problem I will just uninstall VB and start over. Or not as the case may be.
When I reinstalled VB the same half installed version of Kali was still there with the same issues. I have uninstalled 2 times now but am having the same problem. Anyone else come up against this before and if so how did you fix it?
Thanks for reading

PS) Im Joseph, pleased to meet you all etc etc :-)

PPS) I'm using windows 10

Uninstalling VirtualBox does not change your vms in any way, just as uninstalling Word does not delete your .docx files.

If you want to delete a vm, delete it from the VirtualBox Manager window. Right-click the vm and select Remove, then choose the Delete All Files option.

Regarding the failed installs issue, and possibly the "something", please right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log.

Search the far left tab's log for this text:

Attempting fall back to NEM

If you find it, Hyper-V is enabled and needs to be disabled. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active). (The new test builds might have a fix for this problem. If you try a test build and it works, report here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=90853, and save the installer file.)

If you don't find that text, save the far left tab's log, zip the log file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Reboot our PC so no Virtualbox processes are running.

Go to C:\Users\{you} and move the folder .Virtualbox to the desktop. (Note the period in the folder name.)

Start Virtualbox. Virtualbox will make a new 'C:\Users\{you}\.Virtualbox'. This process should reset all Virtualbox settings and clear the guest list. The original guests will still be in their original locations. The default folder for guests is set in the 'Virtualbox Manager' File menu, Preferences, General, Default Machine Folder, and is by default 'C:\Users\{you}\Virtualbox VMs'. You can delete old guests by deleting their folders, as Virtualbox has now forgotten about them since the old .Virtualbox folder was moved.
