Can't seem to get Internet access without a duplicate dhcp server.

Post by richardrichard »

Hello forum,

I'm hoping you can help me, I've been trying to set up a Windows test lab for a few weeks now and have been having problems with setting up the network topology. I can't seem to get Internet access without an unwanted DHCP server appearing rudely on .3

I've been reading everything I can and trying various solutions but nothing seems to work for me. Here's my set up.

My real home network is 192.168.1.0/24, my router sits on 192.168.1.1, The router acts as my real life DHCP server.
I've set up virtualbox with two computers:

COMPUTER1: Windows Server 2019 Standard set up with DC, DNS and DHCP roles. Everything is activated, promoted and running nicely. This server has a two network cards. 1). Internal Network and 2). Bridged Adapter. The IP addresses on this virtual server are 10.0.2.0/24 with .10 being the server. The Bridged card gets assigned an IP address from my real life router, something like 192.168.1.115 as expected. The DHCP service that's running on this server has a scope of .100 - .199

COMPUTER2: Windows 10 Pro. This client computer logs onto the domain successfully and should get it's IP address from the DHCP service sitting on my DC (10.0.2.10) but it doesn't. It seems to get it's IP address from 10.0.2.3 and is assigned 10.0.2.15 ! If I remove the Bridged Adapter from the server so it only has the 'Internal Network' everything works as expected with the DHCP server at .10 assigning .100 to the client but this results in no Internet connection to the outside world. I'm a determined little git and have been working on this, on and off, for about two weeks now but have got to the point where I need to ask for some guidance from people far more intelligent than I.

I assume this .3 DHCP server is either a part of Virtualbox or my real life router but for the life of me I can't seem to disable it. I've disabled the DHCP routers in virtualbox but for obvious reasons can't disable the DHCP server on my router (my wife would beat me)

Am I using the correct network card modes (Internal Network and Bridged Adapter) or should I be using something different?

This setup is just for me to learn from and not mission critical but if someone could point me in the right direction I'd be forever grateful.

All the best
Richard

Interesting problem!

The 10.0.2.3 & .15 strongly resemble Virtualbox's NAT setup, see Virtualbox Networks: In Pictures: NAT.

Additionally, an Internal network can be adjusted to have a DHCP server, too.

Let's take a look at Virtualbox's and each guest's settings.

Please find the file C:\Users\{you}\.Virtualbox\Virtualbox.xml. (Note the period in the folder name.) Please zip this file and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

For each guest, please right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose "Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager". In the window that opens, zip the guest's .vbox file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

You can put all three files in one zip if you wish.
