Virtualbox guest machines won't start
Virtualbox guest machines won't start
I had couple of linux virtual machines on my old laptop with Windows 7, but i moved the hard disk to another laptop and installed Windows 10 and now neither of the virtual machines will start. It shows only the grub screen and then black screen. Any idea what is the problem?

Without a vbox.log, not a clue. *emil78 wrote:Any idea what is the problem?
Pick one failing guest. Start the guest from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.
Right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.
( * Actually I do have a guess, but I still need the vbox.log.)

Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
Yup, my guess was right. Hyper-V is enabled. See HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active)
Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
I followed the instructions and disabled the Hyper-V and after that i was able to start the virtual machines. Thanks.
But on the same laptop i have also Linux Mint installed, and on Linux Mint i was able to start the virtual machines without issues. Why is that?

Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
Linux Mint != Windows, so there's no Hyper-V in Linux.emil78 wrote:on Linux Mint i was able to start the virtual machines without issues. Why is that?
Glad you're up and running!
Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
I have other problem. If i start any of my wsl machines, i have Debian and Ubuntu installed, i get: "Please enable the Virtual Machine Platform Windows feature and ensure virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.", and i think this is because i disabled Hyper-V.
Any solution for this, because i want to use my wsl machines also.

Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
See https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/139 ... puter.html for a boot click switch to turn on Hyper-V or leave it off for Virtualbox. It'll have to be one or the other for now.
Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
So, i can't use both in the same time? That sucks big time!

The devs are working on it, but it's not there yet. Read the saga here: VirtualBox 6.0 and Hyper-Vemil78 wrote:That sucks big time!
I vaguely recall that 32-bit guests might work.
Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
Does wsl1 work with Hyper-V enabled? I converted my wsl machines from wsl1 to wsl2 and enabled Hyper-V, but my virtual machines still won't start.

Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
WSL1 does not use Hyper-V, so you could run WSL1 and Virtualbox together with Hyper-V disabled.
Re: Virtualbox guest machines won't start
I finally make it work after couple restarts. Now i can use WSL and Virtualbox in the same time. Is there any real disadvantages of using WSL 1 over WSL 2?

I have never used WSL 1 or 2. Others will have to weigh in.
