Linux VM doesn't load on Windows 10 with VERR_CPUM_INCOMPATIBLE_XSAVE_COMP_MASK

I've tried loading a few distributions of Linux (kali, Ubuntu), but they either stop at some point with the black screen or there is an error VERR_CPUM_INCOMPATIBLE_XSAVE_COMP_MASK

What does the error mean?

This is on Windows 10 home.

It means you suspended a VM and then upgraded VirtualBox. Saved memory states are only useful when the hardware is identical: i.e. they are not guaranteed to be compatible across versions, so you are supposed to shut down all VMs before doing anything major like moving to a new host, or upgrading VirtualBox.

Right click the VM in the manager and discard the saved state.

I don't understand why people even use this feature, is 10 seconds of your time really so valuable? - and not even that if the VM is running from SSD.
