Only CD will run in window xp Pro virtual machine not dvd's in virtual box

Post by qm2hill »

I installed Windows XP Pro (32bit) as a virtual machine in Oracles VirtualBox to play the older games Riven and Myst. I am in Windows XP Pro, and I only see a cd labeled D: drive, but I don't cd CD/DVD when I go to file explorer. The d drive runs cd disks fine, but it won't detect DVD drives to when I put a perfectly fine DVD of the game Riven into my computers disk drive, it won't dectect the DVD in my windows XP virtual machine. Can someone explain how to make a good DVD disk run in my Windows XP Pro virtual machine? I am new to all this, and I really would appreciate someone's help so I can play my old PC games.

Thanks,

Gregory Hill

The "CD drive" is a DVD drive too. I suspect you'd need to turn on "Passthrough".

Go to the guest's Storage settings, select the CD drive labeled "Host Drive (driveletter)" On the right side of the window, check "Passthrough". You might have to reboot the guest.

checking the passthrough box helped. I've been working on this for days; was driving my up a wall. I just loaded my old favorite pc game Riven thanks to your advice. Many Thanks!
