Re: Error: Failed to open session
Web-searching VERR_SSM_UNEXPECTED_DATA (good idea to do right off, BTW, might get you help quicker) indicates that the guest may be save-stated and that something about the physical host PC, most likely the Virtualbox version, has changed, and the saved state can no longer be restored.
If your guest is in saved state and you updated Virtualbox, you can downgrade Virtualbox back to the version you had before then start the guest, get it shut down properly, then re-upgrade.
If you cannot downgrade or cannot put back whatever else changed, right click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list and click Discard Saved State. The guest will lose what unsaved data is in the saved state and restart as if the power had been unplugged.

Re: Error: Failed to open session
Thank you scottgus1. Discard Saved State worked fine.
