if i open up virtualbox my internet stops working on the host (even if im not running a virtual machine)

I've had so much trouble with the way non-NAT networking works in Vista that I have had to stop using it. The whole way of doing this using host level bridging between the host's real network adapter and the VirtualBox adapter seems fundamentally flawed. I really hope that the VirtualBox folks change how this works soon to something more like the way VMware does it, which works flawlessly.

I am using Vista (Business 32 bit) as a host and have a bridge setup and running with 4 different virtual Linux Distros. Server/client configurations as guest connections. I did have to update to the newest version of VBox and yes I had to load the HotFix from MS to get the memory bug under control. It works fine but was a bit of a pain to setup. I have found if I shut down the Linux virtual boxes and not the VBox program as well the bridge will not come back. Really strange too because the Virtual Boxes see the network and the host bridge sees the client they simply will not communicate. (work around is to shut everything down and close VBox and start from scratch). I did assign static addresses so I could work in my enviornment, but for the life of me can not see that by doing static addressing it would matter. One other thing that I have noticed is if I close the sessions (hybernate to a file) instead of shutting down the sessions it will start right up and work like it is supposed to. Anyone that can shed a light on this one for me I would appreciate it.

I'm using Vista business as host right now, but I too had trouble to get the bridge working.

Here is how I got it working:

1. create the VirtualBox host interface.

2. create a bridge with the host interface and the lan adapter. Note, now your PC loses its IP address, gateway and stuff.

3. Enter network connections and go to the bridge properties, IP V4 properties. Here you set your IP address, gateway, DNS servers,....

4. Leave the network configuration. NOTE: For some reason Vista now LOOSES THE GATEWAY ADDRESS!

5. Go back to the network connections, bridge properties, IP V4 properties and set the gateway again.

Now everything worked for me.
