USB Connected mouse stops working

Post by GaryG »

hi

I am running 2.02, including guest additions, on Ubuntu Hardy and a windows XP VM on a Lenovo laptop.

Everything was ok except now as soon as i start the VM (at the point of the Sun Micro splash screen) the usb connected mouse stops working on the host and does not work on the guest.

If i start another VM (OpenSuse) it works fine.

The only way to get the mouse working again is to shut down the XP VM and remove/ insert the mouse again.

The touchpad mouse and pointer works ok

I cannot remember doing anything to have caused this.

Any help appreciated.

replying to my own posts.........

investigated further...

if i disable mouse capture the USB mouse works only within the VM but the touchpad 'mouse' works within the VM and seamlessly on the host.

If its enabled the USB does not work at all. The touchpad 'mouse' works within the VM and seamlessly on the host at the same time.

In fact there are two seperate cursors - one for the usb mouse, one for the toucpad mouse

any ideas?

Mouse is working but......
If I disable USB, the mouse is working as it should be. Strange huh? 8)
So it is a bug in VB?

This continues to happen in version 3. As soon as vm starts, usb mouse (trackball) is frozen in linux (and does nothing in the guest win2k either.) ps/2 mouse continues to work. Not related to mouse capture, right-ctrl does not affect it.

What does fix it is disabling the usb controller in the vm. So it seems to be related to the guest somehow interfering with the usb devices on linux. I tried doing specific settings on the trackball itself, no luck, and this is a device I should not have to manually tune in any event.

Small possibility is that it is grabbed by the VM (check this with the normal PS/2 mouse, or with the keyboard) because you have either an empty filter, or made a filter for the device.
Even less likely is the possibility is that it IS grabbed, but the VM OS does not have the driver for it, hence not working.

It's worth checking both options though.
