even after installing the Guest Add-ons i still have problems setting the resolution of my windows xp guest on ubuntu hardy heron. I'm limited to 800*600

What video memory have you set?

8 MB should be enough for higher than 800x600 (at least 1280x1024 is possible). You can try increasing it. Did the GA install properly? Do you see the correct driver in use in Control Panel?

the GA installed properly. i tried increasing the video memory but still no difference.

What if you install the GA again, but this time turn on logging (see the /? or /help for the right parameter).

That the installer creates a log file of the installation process. Sometimes it goest so fast, that you don't have time to look at the progress or messages during install that you easily miss an error.
