Problem with Ubuntu 6.06 guest on Xubuntu 7.10 host

Post by rnjn.sinha »

I have installed ubuntu 6.06 server (32 bit) as guest on a machine running 7.10 xubuntu (x86_64) as host. I remember that after installation the guest took a lot of time on first boot but since then everything is working perfectly fine and I had even managed to make a clone of the vdi and create a new virtual machine and the new VM also works fine.

Last week I again tried to clone the hard disk to create another virtual machine. However this time the new vm does not go beyond "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel." stage. Running top command shows that Virtual Box is consuming 100% CPU. I followed other threads where people had been experiencing problems because of cloning. Those solutions do not hold true since in Ubuntu 6.06 we are still referring to devices as /dev/sda1 etc and not by their UUIDs.

I tried to reinstall guest OS from scratch as well but the new image still gets stuck at exactly the same location :( .

Some people have experienced issues with SMP kernel but my original VM has the same kernel and it is working absolutely fine.

I even upgraded to the latest version hoping this would fix the issue but to no avail.

I would be really grateful if anybody can provide more pointers in solving this issue.

The settings of the VMs are the same too? Even enabled PAE, or installed a different kernel (like -virtual) so it doesn't need that?

Yes everything is exactly the same in the working and non-working vm settings. That is why I am even more perplexed.
