Folder contents not copying when copying a non-empty folder from Host to Guest

Post by eth4nhunt »

Hello everyone,

I´m having troubles when copying a folder (with files inside it) from my Windows 10 Host to any VM Guest. When I copy a folder (in any location inside the VM) the only thing that is being copied into the VM is the folder but empty, no files or subdirectories are copied.

It´s also worth to mention that I can only copy files and folders between the host and guest using the drag and drop feature, when doing "Right Click -> Copy" OR "Ctrl + c (on Guest)" it seems the VM doesn´t have something saved in the clipboard because it shows as if nothing is ready to be pasted.

I have both the Extension Pack that correspond to my VirtualBox version installed on the Host and the VBox Guest Adittions in the Guest (installed using the files provided in the Guest Adittions CD image which correspond to my VBox version and not the ones in the repository of the Linux distro)
I´ve already tried with different Linux distros inlcuding Ubuntu and Debian, none of them seems to work.

My setup is Windows 10 version 1909 and I´m using VirtualBox 6.1.10 with the same version of the VM VirtualBox Extension Pack installed.

(I attach the log for my Ubuntu Guest)

Hope anyone can help, I really need to fix this issue, it´s impossible for me to work with this error because of the constant need I have to move files between Host and Guest.

Logs fit in one piece when they are zipped. Also, when posting a log, keep the scenario as simple as possible. This log appears to have started booting from the CD-Rom with Drag-n-Drop off, then later booted from the hard disk, and drag-n-drop was turned on. The log appears to show a whole install sequence, to me. A simpler log would have helped highlight the exact issue.

The log says:
00:39:02.368956 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 6.1.6 r137129 '6.1.6_Ubuntu'
This is Ubuntu's fork still. The "Insert Guest Additions CD Image" command only loads the GAs ISO into the guest's CD drive. It does not run the installer.

Clipboard is only for transferring text or basic images cut & copied from a document, not whole files & folders.

You can also use Guest Additions Shared Folders, see section 4.3 in the manual.

With the Ubuntu fork of GAs still in place, the failure of the folder copy is still not able to be pinned down. Try replacing the GAs with the Virtualbox ISO, then see what happens.

FWIW I have had guests seize up & require an ungraceful power-off when drag-n-dropping. Guest Additions Shared Folder always works for file transfer.
