Windows10 Host Ubuntu Guest - Encryption breaks VM

I have Ubuntu running as a guest VM in VirtualBox 6.1. Works great. Love it. Performance and stability are awesome.
I went to enable encryption on the VM. It went through the process of encrypting the VM. Once completed when I try and power up the VM I enter the password for it and then immediately get the following message:
Instruction at 0x00007FFB355C278E referenced memory at 0x10 The memory could not be read.
The VM never boots. The only change is encrypting it. I have a backup of the VM and have tried this multiple times with various alterations in my approach but so far I simply cannot encrypt this VM.
While it's not the end of the world if I can't encrypt it I would like to resolve the issue because there will be VMs that I do want to encrypt.
Is this a known issue? Any ideas on what might be the cause?
