Upgrade to 6.1.8, Linux 32-bit guests hang after login

Post by bsomervi »

32-bit Linux Guests that worked before upgrade to 6.1.8 now hang after logging in. This only happened after installing the Guest Additions. Similar 64-bit VMS are as before.

Any ideas on how to fix?

Regards
Bill.

Update: seems to be a display emulation problem. Selecting VBoxSVGA and disabling 3D Acceleration gets things going.

Interesting solution, thanks for letting us know.

VboxSVGA is supposed to be only for Windows. Dis you try leaving VMSVGA and just turning off 3D?

Did you use the GAs that came with Virtualbox? GAs from the Linux distros' repositories are forks, not the official GAs that come with Virtualbox as an ISO. What was the older version? Did you try leaving the older version GAs in place with the original video card & 3D setting? Is the video ram slider maxed out?

Hi Scott,

both changes were required.

Only after I installed the GAs that came with the 6.1.8 install did the problem start, I don't use the distro ones because the shared folders don't seem to work.

As I said the older GA worked with 6.1.8, it was only after I installed the 6.1.8 one did it go wrong.

Similar 64-bit Linux guests are fine.

I have always had the video RAM setting at maximum.

Bill.

This sounds like something that you might want to put on the Bugtracker. Put a link back here, a guest log from 6.1.8 GAs running VMSVGA and 3D on, where you get the failed video, and a guest log from what you have now. Subscribe to the ticket so you get emails if anyone wants to ask you a question.

After going to 6.1.8 today, I got multiple login prompts to get in the Kali (Debian) machine, and my screen randomly flashes the login prompt...sometimes makes me log back in and shut down my programs. That was even after restarting the computer and everything. I switched to VboxSVGA a minute ago, and it only made me log in once this time, so hopefully, that does it... Thanks for the idea :)
