I am a student and i am trying to setup a Virtual Server/Client network. i have been trying to set it up for a while and i can connect to the internet but when i try to ping my Server from the client it does not reply i setup internal networking with the ip address of 192.168.0.1 and my client 192.168.0.3 i setup the the client that points only to the server but they both will not talk each have two connections until i can get a reply from the server then i will be removing the internet from the xp. i disabled the firewall just like the manual but nothing and i cannot figure it out...my goal is to be able to setup a virtual server environment so i can setup the domain controller and everything with out using my Laptop other than the virtual system any ideas this is being worked on from only one machine Windows Server 2008 Standard and windows XP Pro Server is using 1 GB of Ram and XP is using 256 mb
thanks

Your description of the network should not give a problem. Have you tried pinging each VM on IP basis? Also the same Internal Network name?

Yes i pinged the server. When I did it from the server to the client I get the message "Destination Host unreachable" if i do it from the client I get "No Response" i went to the Network comunity on my WXP and i saw the server as well as my PC on the Workgroups however I could not access it said i did not have permissions. When I did the same with server i saw nothing was listed from either computers so its like it is there but is not. i have turned on network discovery. i even setup a shared connection to my External connecton my server so i can setup a Static IP and have it give an IP to the client it worked partally. the Server gave my internal network an IP but would have give the Client and address so i set a Static IP with the same Mask and said my server was the gateway. but nothing.

Disabled the Windows Firewall? What is the full message of the destination unreachable, it should mention an IP address. Are they in the same range (you said they were, but you might have made a mistake somewhere).

Yes Per the VirtualBox manual i needed to disable to firewall to both machines so I did until i could find the ports i needed to keep open. the error is the reply from 192.168.0.1 the destination host is unreachable failed 0/4 100% loss.
my server is 192.168.0.1 and my xp client is 192.138.0.3

Are you 100% sure that the XP client is 192.138.0.3 and not 192.168.0.3? With a netmask of 255.255.255.0, there is no room for a wider IP range than the last number, thus not accessible. It's not even a private address too.
Sorry Typo

No they are both Private IP's with the 192.168.0.X format so i can say i am 100% they are on the same network scheme and Subnet masks sorry.

Hi Sasquatch,
just an update as of yesterday or rather arround 5 hrs ago my problems have been resolved. I thought i had the most current version of VirtualBox but I was not i was running 1.6.0 so my teacher had us upgrade to 2.0.2 for our class project, after installing 2.0.2 the issue is resolved I could Ping the Server and I could Ping the Client I could even access the file directory on the server as a networked computer...I setup DCPromo and joined Windows XP to Windows Server 2008's Domain and so everything is working thanks for your assistance for something that only required an update to the software
