Windows 10 Home host linux guests "file errors" with installation of valid isos

Post by Antonovichie »

I have downloaded several isos (Ubuntu desktop and server for 20.04 and 18.04, Debian 10) and none of them will install. They all either freeze, or with Ubuntu 20.04 desktop I get a "sorry there was a problem". My main goal is to install Ubuntu 20.04 desktop. The ISO's SHA256 is correct but when it starts booting the installer and does a check and reports "2 file errors" (Ubuntu 20.04 server only reports "one file error"). I have tried pretty much everything I can think of. I thought maybe disabling VT-x might get me somewhere but I see that isn't possible for 64 bit guests... I tried the Ubuntu cloud images (.ova) but they won't even boot.

I thought of trying 6.0.22 (instead of 6.1.8\) but trying to start the machine just gives an error. The suggestion for fixing the error was to completely disable everything to do with WSL and hyper-v, which is not really going to work for me.

I get the impression that things should work because WSL2 is running fine with 20.04 (so the processor and virtualisation extensions should be working?). I really need to have a proper X environment which is why I am turning to the trusty old VBox in the first place. I haven't had a Windows host in many years now and I have had great success with Linux hosts in the past. On a Linux (Ubuntu 18.04) host I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 no problems, and I don't get the "2 file errors" issue.

It is a Dell Inspiron 7490, which came with Windows 10 Home and has no possibility of installing anything but Windows as host due to Dell deciding not to provide non-Windows disk support.

Any ideas?

Start a guest from full power off, not save-state, and try to do the guest OS install. Let it fail the hash check, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.

Please right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip the log file, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.
