Sound issues - ubuntu 18.04 host, win95/98 guest

Hi Guys,
For quite some time I'm struggling to enable Windows sounds on my VirtualBox win95 machine without success, host OS is ubuntu 18.04. So far I've tried the following things:
- SoundBlaster 16 with all host options (Pulse, ALSA, OSS) - no success
- AC97, automatic driver installation gets triggered when the VM boots after altering the setting, but it doesn't help
- Host-based installation of the WIN95 AC97 Realtek driver (got it from the win98 SE topic) through a mounted .iso file - also nothing
Long story short - I decided to try Win95 for my gaming purposes, because I had similar troubles previously with Win98 SE (at least, I got the windows sounds over there, but nothing in-game, except the intro. And if someone wonders, I did it per the instruction - AC97 drivers for Win 95, installed through the device manager via the .inf file - the game doesn't sing
Any ideas if I have missed something?
Many thanks for your attention!
