Two USB Questions for a Windows 7 Host/Guest System

Post by RobertJ234 »

I have two questions that perhaps somebody can help me with.

1) I recently attempted to add USB support to one of my guest Windows 7 virtual machines. Under the guest's machine's USB settings, I added a Seagate USB device filter. When I started up the guest Windows 7 machine, VirtualBox automatically loaded a new device driver to the HOST machine without prompting me in any way. It simply installed the driver, giving a notification in the system tray area.  How do I find out what was installed, and how would I remove it if I need to later on?

2) My attempt to access my external USB drive in the guest Windows 7 machine did not work. I tried removing the filter mentioned above from settings (not the driver installed to the host, but the filter in the settings), but that didn't help.  The check mark in the USB system tray icon in the guest machine was checked. But I kept getting a failure message at the top of the guest whenever it was started saying that the USB capability had failed. Is there any good instructions available anywhere describing how to get USB drive access working in a Windows 7 guest?

Thank you.

1. This was the Virtualbox USB interceptor driver that takes a USB device that matches a filter or is specifically chosen in the USB menu and puts it into the guest. While the device is in the guest the host's Device Manager will see a Virtualbox USB device instead of the chosen device. This driver should be uninstalled if you ever uninstall Virtualbox. It probably didn't ask because when you installed Virtualbox you gave permission to install Oracle drivers for Bridged & Host-Only and had the 'Always Trust...' box checked when you clicked OK.

2. Carefully go through USB basics and troubleshooting. If you finish all the steps 1-7 and cannot get your USB device into the guest OS, carefully post the outputs of the commands in step 8 as text in

Code: Select all

tags, not screenshots. Zip and post the log step 8 calls for, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.
