Hype: The Time Quest on Windows XP

Post by Pierre93Luc »

Hi everyone,

I actually have the idea to play Hype: The Time Quest on PC, it was a childhood game and I'm a bit nostalgic. I first try to play it on my PC (Windows 10 64bits) but witthout success so I decide to build a Windows XP VM. Unfortunetly, that doesn't work either and I don't know why and I need some help.

My host PC is a Windows 10 64bits and my VM is a Windows XP SP3 32bits. I use VirtualBox 6.0.12.

So... I'm able to install the game with an .iso file I have, already seems to go well, but when I try to launch it I have to case...

1- The first one, if I use the 3DFX settings in the UbiAssistant, it does absolutely nothing, I click on the game and nothing append. I got nGlide installed and I'm supposed to respect all the "conditions" I also try to play with Compatibility in the .exe properties and put it on Windows 98 or 95.

2- Second case, if I use the D3D settings in the UbiAssistant too, when I launch the game I got an error message : "No D3D hardware drivers found. Please reinstall DirectX". I installed DirectX 9 on the VM and I active the 3D Accelarator in the settings of the VM too.

Please provide a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

How did you install the Guest Additions?

Installing the accelerated graphics DLLs on XP involves replacing some system DLLs (specifically some directx 8 DLLs), and XP doesn't like that, it thinks the DLLs have been corrupted. Hence you have to install the GAs in safe mode.

Also, when installing the GAs there's a box to tick to install 3D support, and this checkbox defaults to OFF. When turned on you'll be prompted whether you want to install modern drivers or old style (I can't remember the exact wording, because this dialog no longer exists in the version I use), you should use old style.

In fact, when I installed the Guest Add the first time, I did it on normal boot. I tried to check the the DirectX option but it said than I need to be in Safe mode to install it.

I finish the installation on Normal mode without DirectX, try the game without success.

After that, I reboot on Safe Mode to install the DirectX option but don't work either. However, they didn't ask me about an Old mode or something like that.

I will try to resintall the GA from Safe mode directly from an other VM and see what's append

So, I tried to reinstall all the GA directly on safe mode on a new VM and still nothing. I confirm, I did'nt have any dialog box about an Modern/Old driver version, maybe I should try an older version of VB ?

Here's the choice than I got with te GA :

This time too, I didn't install DirectX 9 on the side, seem than the GA already install it ? The other time I installed GA + DirectX 9, this time, only GA.

VirtualBox 6.0.x was still transitioning away from the VBoxVGA graphics controller, i.e. they had the deprecation warning about 3D acceleration with this controller.

Note: don't jump into using the VBoxSVGA controller. That's even worse for your point of view since it drops support for XP 3D acceleration entirely.

To be clear, the dialog box that appears, to allow you to choose 3D driver model, only appears after you click Install on the GAs installer dialog that you show. I thought I remembered trying this with VirtualBox 6.0.x, but I could be wrong. Certainly it may be worth trying this with VirtualBox 5.2.42. Do remember not to commit the cardinal sin: you must never have GAs or extension pack installed that is newer than the host software. If possible it would be best to install XP from scratch, since .vbox files may not be backwards compatible either (had you started from 5.2.x then VirtualBox would keep a backup of the obsolete config when you upgrade, but that isn't the case here).

I will follow your advise and try with a fresh VM with the 5.2.42 version and let you know what append.

In fact, when I installed GA, after I click Install, it install the GA without asking me anything else.

What do you mean by that ? Since my VM is XP and my host is W10 I'm ok right ? When I install GA I go in "Devices" and directly "Add GA CD" or something like that (don't know the exact formulation as I'm french) and the installation prompt appear. Or I don't understand

Examples: Virtualbox 5.2.34 and Guest Additions 5.2.36 - the GAs are more recent than Virtualbox, and 3D functions may not work.

VB 5.2.42 and GAs 6.0.something still installed - definitely a problem, way too much of a disconnect.

VB 5.2.42 and GAs 5.2 34 - VB newer than GAs, 3D functions might still work, but things might break.

VB 5.2.42 and GAs 5.2.42 - perfect! as long as the guest OS displays properly. With 3D acceleration it may be best to match VB and GAs versions.
