can't open virtualbox manager or VMs

Post by lor91 »

Hi all,

At my wits end here. I have been having this issue on and off for a while now. One day I will turn my PC on and virtualbox will stop opening when I attempt to run it. I had not wiped my PC in years so that was the first thing I did. Worked absolutely fine for a couple of days but now I'm having the same issue again.

Symptoms:
Virtualbox manager fails to start no matter if run as admin is used

Processes for "Virtual Box Manager" and "Virtual Box Interface" are created, but don't do anything

Trying to run VMs from .vbox files does nothing either, apart from the processes in task manager

Steps taken so far:

Clean install of windows 1909 (Virtualbox would open fine for a day, today it doesn't, hence the following steps and this post)
Fresh install of VBox 6.1.8
Uninstalled Avast Free Anti Virus
Installed CCleaner and cleaned registry entries
Rebooted PC
Added exception to the Virtualbox folder in windows defender
Enabled Windows Virtualisation Platform and Windows Hypervisor platform
Uninstalled VB with CCleaner, rebooted
Installed virtualbox 4.1, same issue

EDIT:

Have now also tried the following:

Full uninstall of VBox, CCleaner to remove registry entries, reboot, and followed guidance from scotgus1 on another post (My account isn't old enough to post links) by removing entirely the c:\users\USERNAME\.virtualbox folder

And I have removed the virtual machine storage folder.

Seriously cannot understand what is going on here. Why would it work wonderfully for 2 days then randomly stop working on next boot? The only thing I can possibly think is AVG anti virus got installed sneakily alongside a PDF reader, but I've uninstalled that too and the issue persists.

Absolutely no idea what to do next. This is not the first time I've had this particular issue, I've had it on and off for a year or two now, but assumed it was something on my system. Now that I've done a completely fresh install of Windows 10 and tried the above steps I have no idea what to do from here.

Uninstalling Avast never did any any harm.

Enabling Hyper-v will kill VirtualBox. Maybe one day the two will get along but not now. Get rid of Hyper-v completely. See FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests for tips.

p.s. You can also stop using CCleaner - IMV more worthless snake oil.

p.p.s. Cross posting is against the forum rules, as it causes duplication and wasted effort. I have deleted your two other posts on this matter.
