Hi,
I'm new to VM's and have tried to setup 2 different VM environments from 2 virtualized drives from 2 different laptops. I created both VHD & VHDX files, created the VM by matching the OS then added the virtual disk by selecting it in the Boot Hard Disk area & selecting the 'use existing hard disk' option. I then chose the VHD file.

Toshiba Laptop 1 - Windows XP 32 bit - I just get a black screen after the Oracle splash screen
Laptop 2 - Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit - I get "Starting Windows" then BSOD then it cycles again and again through

I have tried every option available as far as i know in the system settings but neither of these VM's boot. I either get a blank black screen or the dreaded BSOD.

Please can someone point me in the right direction, I'm sure it's something silly i'm doing.

Trying to convert a physical setup to a vm is not the ideal way to start using virtual machines. The easiest way to get started is to install a fresh copy of the OS you want to run into a vm.

P2V is certainly possible but there are plenty of ways to go wrong, because the environment (the "hardware" on which the OS is running) is quite different (because the vm's hardware is emulated), so the installed device drivers are wrong for a start. If you can get it to boot, Windows update can sort that out. If it won't boot, there is nowhere to go really.

Wrong IO-APIC setting.

Stop 0x7B, wrong disk controller. Don't use SCSI or SATA, try IDE.
