I have installed a windows 3.1 guest system and MS Excel 5.0.
It works fine.
However when I want to open a second file in Excel I get error message.

Can someone help me how to overcome it?

We can't do much without an exact error message. Have you googled for that yet? As Windows 3.1 and Excel 5.0 are ancient, you're actually not at the right place here. Not much users here use these programs.
