Ubuntu guest on Ubuntu host limited to 800x600 resolution

Then it seems like the vboxvideo driver is best avoided, as the screen res was wrong with it installed, and if it is no longer there, the screen res is perfect and what I want.

If you don't want the vboxvideo, than set the driver to vesa in your xorg.conf. You can check with the other kernel that has the GA installed to see if it works. If it does, you know it's safe to install the GA again on the new kernel.
