Connect Virtualbox running ubuntu server to a local network

Post by 4lfr3d0 »

Hi! I'm new inthe forum. I have an issue with a project that I'm doing, let me explain it. I have set up a LAN with a Cisco router and a Cisco switch, and my Windows 10 PC, I have assigned an IP to the router and to my laptop, in the same segment and I have connection, I can do a ping between the router and my pc with no problem, everything is wired. I set up a virtual machine running Ubuntu Server 18.04 in my windows PC, and I want to integrate it in my LAN, first of all I choose Bridge Adapter in networks settings of VirtualBox, and I set up a static IP in Ubuntu machine, I can ping my windows 10 PC from Ubuntu, but when I try to ping my router which is in the same segment I can't, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I hope someone can help me. May be Im not giving enough details, but tell me and I will add details.

Does your LAN have a DHCP server? If it does, you should not need to set a static IP in your vm if it is set to bridged. It should get an IP from DHCP just as the host does. The host, the guest and the router should all have IPs in the same IP subnet.

If the vm is set to bridged mode, it should behave just like the host or any other physical machine in the same LAN. All machines (and the router) should be able to connect to each other. You would use normal network network debugging to solve connection problems. The network protocols cannot recognise what devices are on the network. All they see is an address.

Please post a few things to help us diagnose the Virtualbox part of your setup, using

Code: Select all

tags for text command outputs, or the forum's Upload Attachment tab for zipped files:

'ipconfig /all' on the Windows host

'ifconfig' on the Ubuntu guest

Zip of the guest's .vbox file, and the guest's vbox.log (shut the guest down first before taking these files)

Fancier switches can be set to not allow more than one PC to have network traffic on a particular network port. This would block the guest from accessing the network. Be sure you have not set any such filters in your Cisco switch.
