Linux guest installations freeze

Virtualbox Info
  • v6.1.2
  • v6.1.4
Host System
  • Windows 10
  • 32GB RAM
  • 4 cores
  • 476GB free storage
Guest Systems
  • Pop_OS! 18.04
  • Pop_OS! 19.10
  • Ubuntu 20.04
Virtualbox Configuration For Each ISO
  • 20GB base memory
  • 200GB storage
  • 2 processors w/ 100% execution cap
  • 128MB video memory
For some strange reason, I am unable to get the above guest ISOs to install using the virtualbox version I have. For the Pop_OS isos, the installation hangs at the very beginning and doesn't even launch the installer. For the Ubuntu iso, it launches a purple screen and has 2 icons at the bottom. I have attached pictures of each.

I get the same result when I try virtualbox v6.1.4. I went through my Windows system and uninstalled the following:
  • Virtualbox under Program Files
  • .Virtualbox in user folder
  • Virtualbox VMs in user folder
  • Uninstalled VirtualBox using the uninstall method
  • Cleared registry of all files related to "virtualbox"
I then restarted my machine, downloaded the installers for the above virtualbox versions and still ran into the same issue. I leave the screen alone for about 5 minutes each time.

Any thoughts on what might be going on? I'm happy to provide logs, if someone wouldn't mind pointing me to them.

Thanks in advance!

Pick one guest. Start the guest from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the guest from within the guest OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the guest with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the guest in the main Virtualbox window's guest list, choose Show Log. Save the far left tab's log, zip it, and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

It appears that Virtualization Protection was enabled on my machine. I disabled it and was then able to create and run the VMs successfully. Apologies for the overlooked error and thanks for your assistance @scottgus1!

Where was Virtualization Protection enabled? How did you disable it?

I have never heard of it (and neither have Google or Bing).

Sorry. I used the wrong language. What I really ended up doing was disabling virtual based security in credential guard. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/689 ... -10-a.html

My specific solution might be specific to my laptop, as it is a company laptop but here are the steps I took:
  • Looks like there is a configuration in the configuration manager of my laptop for virtual machines. I clicked that and ran "Evaluate."
  • I waited about 15minutes and then restarted the machine.
  • When the screen came back on I pressed and held F3.
  • After this, there were prompts to disable credential guard and then virtualization security.
