Mozilla Session info lost in VirtualBox shared folder

The Mozilla Thunderbird profiles don't seem to save all settings (passwords, custom toolbar).
It appears to only be a problem with virtual box shared folders, and not a problem if I store the profile locally on the guest.

Any ideas to try?

Guest Additions Shared Folders are only for file transfer and don't support everything that can be done with a real shared folder or a local folder.

I think I may have found a workaround. Mozilla Thunderbird creates *.json.tmp files.
After exiting Thunderbird, remove the .tmp suffix.
