HD Mechanical failure, what files to recover for data!

My hard drive failed, and the data recovering group is going to try and see what data if recoverable. I had everything backed up
except for Virtual Box. So my questions is what specific files have my data in VB so I can tell them to recover those and then
I should be okay? Just add to the new VBox on the new HD? I have searched internet and they mention shared files but I didnt have that
on the HD that failed. Any help would be grateful or referral to info somewhere. Be safe and healthy. I guess since I am stuck at home
it was good now so I can spent the time trying to solve how to get my lost data files.

The best way to see the files that make up a guest is to make a new guest and see what is generated.
The guest's disk file is very likely fragmented and forum gurus say that it is difficult to impossible to reassemble it because it is such a big file. If it was a completely-Virtualbox guest and no changes were made to the New Guest Wizard when it was created, then the guest disk file would be a .vdi file. See "All about VDI's"
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8046.
If you did not encrypt the guest disk then your guest's files might be in plain sight on the disk.

Thank you for the reply. So if my KMR.vdi is recoverable, I might be able to import it to Vbox and save the day? I dont see any guest.vdi files, only the one listed that is named for the vbox machine. Seems too simple, am I overlooking something?

The virtualbox vm is called a guest, and there is usually no 'guest.vdi' unless you called the guest "guest". The name of the .vdi defaults to being the guest name, along with the .vbox file. So if 'KMR' was the name of your guest, and if you did not have any snapshots, then the KMR.vbox file and the KMR.vdi are what you need to get the guest going again.

Thanks again and will see if those two are able to be recovered. Be safe and healthy and any other tips would be appreciated. What a mess without the proper backup.
