Unable to install on Windows 10--SORTED- THANKS

Post by MATF »

Hi help and advice needed please.
Attempting to install a virtual XP machine on a new windows !0 computer, virtualbox installs but I am unable to install the guest operating system. Disc controller insists that it is IDE not SATA so doesnt find setup.exe on the DVD so wont run installation process. Doesnt see my USB devices either. Try to alter odd settings and OK box greys out.

When I try to start the session inside VB I get:-
Not in a hypervisor partition (HVP=0) (VERR_NEM_NOT_AVAILABLE).
VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).

I use VB on my windows 7 machine and have done so for a long time and always OK but getting very frustrated
I am a computer user only, so not at all technical.

I am probably missing something simple ( which happens a lot at my advanced age, silver surfer ) but still cant see it. So any basic advice will be a great help.

As soon as I had posted this I had another thought which is often the way. I changed a BIOS setting and it seemd to have worked.
Thanks

MatF

Good old rubber duck debugging, eh?

You probably changed the "Virtualization technolgy" (intel VT-x/AMD-V) setting. That's the one that clears up the VERR's you posted.

Not sure about the IDE vs SATA problem. XP was IDE all the way, and did not understand SATA. The New Guest Wizard sets up XP guests with everything on IDE. If you set the guest disk or CD controllers to SATA because your real PC is SATA, then you don't have to do that. The guest environment is completely virtual except for the CPU itself and does not in any way have to match the host's physical hardware.

Glad you're up and running!
