PNP Detected fatal error VB 6.1.4 and 6.1.6

I have been working on the guest machine without any problems. Then I had some issues with a USB hard drive being detected and undetected repeatedly which ended up in a IRQL Not Less or Equal BSOD. I saw the upgrade to VB 6.1.6 and when I installed it I got a BSOD. When I restarted the virtual machine couldn't find the network card. I went into device manager and deleted the driver, uninstalled and reinstalled vb. At the password prompt, the mouse and keyboard wouldn't function (the backlit keyboard was dark) and even plugging in a second mouse didn't help so I had to reset the PC.
Now when I open the guest (at the point of the black screen before the VB logo comes up), I get the PNP Detected a fatal error BSOD. I uninstalled 6.1.6 and reverted back to 6.1.4 but it does the same thing. This is a problem as I need the guest machine.
Any ideas?
Host: W10 64bit Guest: Win10 32 bit.
