Flicker when running videos on windows 95 emulator

Post by Bootstraps »

I am running a windows 95 emulator to run some Dorling Kindersley games from my childhood, the games have installed fine but when any of the games run, even the sample video in quick time player, they all constantly stutter and flicker

The mouse cursor flashes on and off and the videos run terribly, they do get better when the cursor is off the screen but not by much

I have tried searching for a solution beforehand it appears this has been a problem for years but couldn't find any apparent fix for it, is this an unfixable issue?

Thanks in advance

I assume you're referring to a VirtualBox VM that has Win95 installed?

Win9x guests are not officially supported - way too old. Mainly that means that no "Guest Additions" are available for that OS, which in turn means only basic emulated graphics hardware (no accelerated graphics). If the game is heavily graphics oriented then it may not work well.

In fact the same might be said for all VMs: if the application is heavily depending on good hardware performance then it will not work well on emulated hardware. But, things like the OS itself, network apps, number crunching apps (since the CPU is not emulated), office apps etc all work well.

Graphical games: not so much.
