I have had a Ctrl or Shift key stick before, and it is annoying. However there is no special Virtualbox setting to influence the sticking for bad or good.
FWIW the same thing happens on my Windows tablet when I am using the touch keyboard (Virtualbox is not installed on this tablet.). Occasionally a key sticks, usually because I am moving around too fast and the OS gets stuck doing something and missed the signal to let up on the key. (Keyboard signals are not just "send a letter to the OS", they're "this key went down" and "this key came up". The OS interprets key-down and key-up to mean whatever it's supposed to mean, and if key-up gets missed, then the OS will still think the key is down when it isn't.)
If you find that it is the right Ctrl key that sticks, that is significant, because the right Ctrl key is the Host key on Windows host PCs, to allow you to break the keyboard out of the guest environment so you can type on the host or run a Virtualbox keyboard shortcut. I changed the Host key to right-Shift-right-Ctrl combination, so I could use both Ctrl keys for a program I regularly use.

I had the same annoying thing almost 5 times a day. I found out if you go to the Enter/Keyboard menu and click Enter Host Key Combination the problem is solved (for a while) without having to restart.
Cheers!
