Virtualbox and External USB HD w/Win10

Hi,

I've installed Virtualbox on external usb hard drive. Installation itself went ok but when I try to choose the installation media to install the actual virtual machine OS (win 7 pro ISO file) from that same external usb hard drive, I don't even get the option to do that. The option to choose ANY installation media lacks completely. Is this "flaw" due the fact that Virtualbox is installed on external usb hard drive or have I made some mistake that I'm not aware of? I followed the official installation guide and the virtual machine seems to be ok except the fact that I'm unable to install any OS due to before mentioned reason.

Thanks for any help...

Nope, I'm not aware of any such limitation.

Where (what dialog) are you using to select the ISO? - post a screenshot.

p.s. Installing a VM on a USB drive usually ends badly. I hope at least it's a USB 3.x SSD, and definitely not a USB flash drive.

I know it might be a little "shifty move" to use usb... and no I'm not using flash drive.

According to install guide there's supposed to be a "First start wizard"... well I've been triple checking that even by installing a new virtual machine and yet I've never seen such an wizard. Don't know why. I've also tried to use "Virtual media manager" but it also lacks the menu option for choosing any installation media. I did manage to find out a way to choose the correct iso-file on my own so let's see what happens...

Thanks for the comment though. I'll post a msg after I know what happened.

The "First start wizard" only appears if you launch the VM without going into the settings dialogs. If you do the latter then you're expected to be an experienced magician who doesn't need help from wizards. And to achieve the same effect is trivial: attach the ISO using the storage panel of the settings, then launch the VM.

Virtual Media Manager is for global management of media, e.g. purge an ISO from all VMs. If you want to tweak the media list for a specific VM, go to the storage panel for that VM.
