I've tried installing both 18.04 LTS and 19.10 versions of Ubuntu desktop. Hours and hours of random crashes, long blank screens that led to no outcome. Since the current version clearly does not work, could anyone please point me to a VirtualBox - Linux versions combo that will result in a usable Linux desktop?
I'm running VirtualBox on a Dell Latitude 5590 desktop with Windows 10 Pro version 10.0.18363 Build 18363
Thanks very much, eugen
Can anyone install Ubuntu onto the Windows 6.1.4 r136177 (Qt5.6.2)

Windows Version 6.1.2 r135662 (Qt5.6.2) is not any better either. Shortly after I select the .ISO image I'm getting the error below:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu 19.10.
Call to VidMessageSlotMap failed: Last=0xc000000d/87 (VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED).

Excellent information, thanks very much! Since this is so commonly used knowledge, why don't you guys add a readme.txt that can be brought up from VirtualBox's setup program that documents what the required steps are on Windows? Windows is still a commonly used desktop at work. It costs ~$30/month to get a decent Ubuntu VM on Azure, yet my company spent several times that of my hourly salary to setup a piece of free software. Those economics do not really add up in the age of cloud computing.
Thank you, Eugen

Because we guys ain't the developers. If you wish to make this suggestion, post it on the Bugtrackereugen_nw wrote:why don't you guys....
Paid support for Virtualbox costs $6100 (see Oracle Store) or $1220 if you can get away with a "socket" whatever that is. Counting from after you asked the question, how much time & money did the free forum save you by helping you get your guest running? More likely you spent several hours of your company's time fiddling with free software that gave you a specific warning, and you didn't come to the forum right away to ask.eugen_nw wrote:It costs ~$30/month ... my company spent several times that of my hourly salary to setup a piece of free software.
That said, a quick readme might be good. I looked through the (rather voluminous) manual and did not see a easy-to-find quick problems & solutions page. However, the problems that arise are sometimes caused by other sources, such as your VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED, which is caused by Microsoft. So a manual-based readme might not be practical, and a web-based readme might be more necessary. And that is what we do have here on the forum. Just have to point people to the forum. Hey, you know what? There's a "Help" menu in the main Virtualbox window, with choices for the manual and the forum! Google would also show the way if folks web-search the error message, especially if after learning there's a forum for free Virtualbox they add the site restriction search term:
VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED site:forums.virtualbox.org
though web-searching doesn't take one straight to the 64-bits tutorial above.
So maybe a link to the forum in the error messages might help (if one isn't there already, and I think there is, at least in the Guru Meditation error message).
I put a link in the Howtos and Tutorials section for Windows Hosts to the 64-bits tutorial above. As you say, it was a bit hard to find from the forum's home page, even for me who's been on the forum a lot.
