Critical error preventing VirtualBox from launching

Post by Kivoie »

This is my first post, sorry if it's in the wrong section.

Whenever I try and launch my VirtualBox (6.1.4) on my host I get an error saying that there's a duplicate image found in one of my virtual machine folders.

Code: Select all

Failed to acquire the VirtualBox COM object.

The application will now terminate.

Cannot register the DVD image 'C:\Users\danny\Documents\Virtual Machines\Wide Area Networking\ETW-CSR1000v Non-Borked\csr1000v-universalk9-install.iso' {3b5e3b68-b260-42a1-b07e-387076a9ec56} because a CD/DVD image 'C:\Users\danny\Documents\Virtual Machines\Wide Area Networking\ETW-CSR1000v Non-borked\csr1000v-universalk9-install.iso' with UUID {4c12b58e-0130-464f-a8c5-7110a05be06f} already exists.

Result Code: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBoxWrap
Interface: IVirtualBox {d0a0163f-e254-4e5b-a1f2-011cf991c38d}
Callee: IVirtualBoxClient {d2937a8e-cb8d-4382-90ba-b7da78a74573}
This only started happening after my computer had a BSoD while I was using VirtualBox a few days ago. The error keeps showing up whenever I try and launch VB whether the folder above exists or not...
I have tried:
  • Running VirtualBox as Administrator with the executable, and not the shortcut
  • Launching .vbox and .ova files from Windows explorer
  • Fully Uninstalling/Reinstalling VirtualBox
  • Updating host drivers
  • Disabling and Re-enabling Virtualization in BIOS
  • Removing/Replacing the directory stated in the error
  • Editing/Deleting the <DVDImages> fields in the .vbox file located in its directory
  • Scanning my host drive for errors
I have tried everything that I have found online and nothing seems to work :( . A friend of mine said he had the exact same problem with his VirtualBox, but he fixed it by wiping his host OS entirely and reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows... I really don't want to do that because I need this for my school work... I'm all out of ideas, but any help would be much appreciated! :D

My system specs, if it's needed:
i5-4210H 2.90GHz
Intel HD4600 and NVIDIA 940M
12GB DDR3
Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
Running host and guests on an SSD

Open the Media Manager and remove all the ISOs from it.

When done, add the necessary ISO only to one of your guests.

Sorry for not being specific enough, but the VirtualBox Manager is what I'm having problems with. It won't even launch at all, so there's no way for me to access the media manager... Whenever I launch VirtualBox it gives me the error window instead of the VirtualBox Manager.

1) Rename the "VirtualBox VMs" folder to e.g. "VirtualBox VMs bak"
2) Remove/move out VirtualBox.xml (don't know where it's located on your OS).
3) Create the "VirtualBox VMs" folder
4) Move one of your VMs to it (the one your interested in)
5) Make a copy of its configuration XML file
6) Open the XML it in any text editor and remove everything related to ISOs, save it.

Launch VirtualBox. Machine -> Add -> Your VM

After some digging around online, I finally got my VirtualBox working again! It took me a while but I found the file you mentioned in the C:\Users\[username]\.VirtualBox\ directory. I deleted the lines which contained the image UUIDs (same ones from my error message), saved the file, and VirtualBox launches properly now. Thank you so much for the help! :D
