Sony Ebook reader software

This problem has been around since Sony released their ebook. It's currently listed as an official VB bug. Apparently there are very few VB users who also use the Sony Ebook, so these threads tend to die with only one or two posts.

Short answer: I'm sure VB knows about this. I'm equally sure they haven't issued a fix, as VB 2.06 and the latest updated XP still has the same old, same old problem - seems to install okay, but won't load the main program.

Sigh.

One of these releases...maybe....

Well count me as another VB user who wanted to load my Sony eLibrary software in Windows on VB so I wouldn't have to reboot from Linux to Windows just to download books. In fact, that was my original reason for installing VB.

I have this issue too, very disappointing. VirtualBox bug id is 2202.

This problem is not limited to VB. The software simply doesn't work very well. It wont run on XP Pro SP3 on a windows PC for me (it ran once or twice to begin with). it appears in the processes window briefly in task manager & then disappears.

Add me to this list. I dont have a dual boot capability, VB is the ONLY way I can run Windows. That means my Sony reader is a boat anchor.

The real problem is DRM. Without that nonsense I could just buy the books I wanted and move on.

Sony .. WHY??????

I beg you Sony, start thinking about your customers, DRM is VERY unpopular.

Another one here bitten by this problem. Just tested with VBox 2.2 and no change.

Hi,

Just got this working (yea me)! My wife was very annoyed (at Sony) that the eReader would not connect to her new mac. I decided to sit down and figure this out once and for all...

1) Install VBox 2.2.0 (I did not test this on earlier versions, so your mileage my vary)
2) Install Windows XP service pack (SP) 3 (my copy is the pro version, but don't know why this shouldn't work with all versions)
2.5) Shutdown the XP VM (virtual machine)
3) Go into settings for the XP VM and select the General/Advanced settings
4) Check Enable ACPI, Enable IO ACPI, Enable VT-x, Enable PAE/NX
5) Restart the XP VM
6) Install the Sony Reader Software and update it to the 2.x (latest) version
7) Plug the reader in to the USB port and (important!) select the reader from the Devices/USB Devices menu

Whala! As they say - eReader on a mac. I've done this with a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro, so I suspect that it should work with any modern Mac.

Have fun,
Greg

I finally found a solution that worked for me - posted by calvertmg on http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/2202

I am now happily running Sony's Reader software in my VirtualBox and purchasing and loading books to my ebook.

I'm trying to help a friend get her e-reader to work on a vm setup, unfortunately, her machine is old enough that it doesnt support hardware virtualization (vt-x, or whatever its acronym is). I am trying to see if calibre will work as a replacement, but our local library seems to prefer using some sort of adobe-implemented interface for managing its e-materials, it doesnt even appear to use the e-reader's own default software.
