Networking on a virtual freeDos install

Hi,
I have a freeDos VM running on an Ubuntu virtualbox host
freeDos generally works fine, and I have installed Trumpet TCP on the machine. However if I try to use networking to ping any IP other than 127.0.0.1 from within the VM, in either bridged or NAT mode, I get the error at the DOS terminal:
"cannot resolve the host's hardware address"
When in bridged mode however, external machines can ping the VM fine....it is only outbound traffic from the VM which seems to be affected
I have tried various different virtual network adapters. The VM packet driver can see the NIC, and its MAC address, which is echoed to screen at VM startup.
I have run the same VM, via an exported appliance ova file, on a different host (linux mint) with the same behaviour
Any ideas?
Cheers!
