Installation Vista64 -guest on Ubuntu 8.04 -host failed

Postby noke » 16. Sep 2008, 16:41

I'm trying to virtulise Vista64 on my Ubuntu 8.04 (amd64) with VirtualBox 2.0.2, but I've got the following error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

Status: 0xc000035a

Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode.

I've used VirtualBox with AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ . Can you help me?

The AMD 3200+ processor does not have AMD-v support, thus you can't run 64 bit guests. See the manual chapter 1.6 and the VirtualBox FAQ for what you do need for 64 bit Guest support.

And what says "egrep '^flags.*(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo"?

First go into the BIOS on your host and enable VT-x or AMD-V depending on your chip make.

Next, go to the settings for the Vista guest, if you are in the VirtualBox GUI there is an Advanced tab make sure that "Enable I/O APIC" and "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" are both checked. These settings will need to be enabled for all guests on the host or else VB will complain about some guest with hardware VT enabled and some not enabled.

Give it a shot, it worked for me.

First try this command. If no output, you dont have a modern CPU and that doesnt work.

That is really strange, as my laptop gives no output, but my processor is certainly VT-x capable. I can see that when I boot to windows and run CPU-z. And it's on the Intel CPU site (T2300).

But as I stated before, the 3200+ does NOT have AMD-v support. Unless it's on an AM2+ socket, but why use the 3200+ if there are much better CPUs for that socket for not much more.
