Virtualbox 6.1.2 copy&paste partially broken

Post by Megabreit »

Host OS is Windows 8
Guest OS is Ubuntu 18.04

I upgraded from 6.0.14 to 6.1.2. Matching guest additions are also installed.
Copy & Paste was working fine with 6.0.14 in both directions and I could copy & paste "larger amounts" of text characters. A few tens or hundred lines worked fine.
With 6.1.2 I can only copy & paste very view lines, about 4 to 8, depending on their length. This applies to both directions.
When the contents becomes to large, the paste target "remembers" the last clipboard content and pastes it instead.

Has anybody seen this? Any hints? Workarounds? Any way to tell the developers to check this behavior?

FYI I went back to 6.0 (6.0.16) and the copy&paste problem is gone. Everything works as before.
If you rely on a working copy&paste from a linux guest, then don't install 6.1!

I haven't moved to 6.1.2 yet, but that sounds like something important for them to know about. If they intended that to be a "feature" then that's unfortunate...

Uh... why does the ticket say "log not available"? Of course a log is available, and without it your ticket gets ignored.

I don't have it running anymore, and I don't want to reinstall it (local permission issue)... do you think that a log from 6.0.16 will be accepted?

The log has to capture the problem, so no, I doubt it would be acceptable.

I updated the ticket. I found the old log and attached it. Somehow it survived the downgrade.

With newer versions, it seems the problem is not anymore only partially, it does not work at all now. May have to do with the clipboard client agent, but I don't have the time to dig deeper. I will install an older version is you suggested.

The ticket is now open for 2 months. Sadly no update for quite some time.
Also no mentions in the release notes about fixed problems. It's just as the ticket wasn't there.
Is there anything I can do? Or anything I did? Or maybe not did?

Currently I can not recommend Virtual Box 6.1 if someone is relying on a working clipboard.

I don't even want to fiddle with having to screw around with going further and further backlevel just to find a version that isn't broken.

But now I've contaminated my system with VBox libraries, and I don't know if they can be cleaned out enough to make KVM work. I installed VBox because I was building an image for my daughter's computer. But VBox continues to be more and more broken.
