VB does not want to boot?

Post by eth »

Hello! VB has worked well for me for months, but it doesn't want to work anymore. The past few days I haven't had time to use my computer, so I haven't changed anything. Before that, VB worked without problems, but now it doesn't want to boot any of my VMs.

I'm still on a 32-bit Xubuntu, and I have tried to use multiple versions of VB, but nothing works. I use Ubuntu VMs and they get to the flashing underscore command line screen, then freeze. This happens to all VMs. I tried booting into recovery mode, but it freezes on something different every time. I searched for solutions and they were only to disable settings I already had disabled. I tried disabling VT-x, and a VM booted, but it could only show the lock screen. The desktop was also black.

I can't do anything to the VM when it freezes, then it crashes the window, but the memory is still being used, and VB thinks the VM is running. If I try to stop/reset/pause the VM from VB, it also freezes VB and sometimes the desktop. I've had to force shutdown twice, and I have now uninstalled VB. Is there something wrong with my host?

I can't upload the log file, so here is a pastebin.

32-bit host (physical) PC support was removed in 6.0.x (if I remember right). 5.2.x & earlier should still have 32-bit host PC support. Until you can run a 64-bit OS, stick with 5.2.x. Also, be sure to use https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads, instead of your distro's repository. Distro downloads are forks, and they sometimes change the fork, so we don't support forked Virtualbox.

Once you have installed official Virtualbox 5.2.something, run a guest from cold boot, not save-state, & run until you see the problem. If you can shut down the guest from within the guest OS, do so. Otherwise close the Guest window with the Power Off option. Then zip and post that vbox.log using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

I downloaded VB from the Software Center because there isn't a download for 32-bit Ubuntu 18.04 on the website.

I remember looking for a 32-bit Ubuntu 18.04, couldn't find one either.

Try zipping and posting a guest vbox.log using the forum's Upload Attachment tab, and maybe a Linux guru can help out.

As Scott already mentioned, support for 32bit hosts was dropped in 6.x, so no point in bumping the thread.

I think the idea was to go back to 5.2, but there doesn't seem to be a version for 32-bit Ubuntu 18.04.

@eth, can your PC run a 64-bit Linux?

Just use the 32 bit version for Ubuntu 16.04; it should still work on later 32 bit Ubuntu versions.
