Could not insert VBoxGuestAdditions.iso, machine has no optical drives

Hi,

From VM, I select Device->Insert Guest Additions CD Image.
Error: Could not insert the c:\program files\oracle\virtualbox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso disk image file, machine has no optical drives. Please add drive using storage page of virtual machine setting windows.

Please guide on how to create optical drives.

How did you manage to create a vm without one?

Shut down the vm. From the VirtualBox Manager window, select your vm then select Settings. In Settings, select Storage. Beside the controller entry you will see two disk icons with green Plus signs on them. The left one allows yo to add an optical drive, the other is for adding a hard drive.

Hi,

I shutdown the VM, at storage I added VBoxGuestAdditions.iso as Optical drive IDE secondary master.
I start the VM, at Devices->Optical drives VBoxGuestAdditions.iso is selected.
At Devices->Insert Guest Additions CD Image, now I have error Unable to insert virtual optical disk c:\program files\oracle\virtualbox VBoxGuestAdditions.iso .
Could not mount the media/drive 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' (VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED).

Kindly assist.

VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED means what it says: can't insert new CD because OS has locked the current CD in the drive.

p.s. You can't add an ISO as a drive. The ISO represents removable media. You add the drive to the VM recipe, then you can insert and eject media from the drive. It's important to think about these things correctly.
