I have made approximately 12 WinXP pro sp3 (32-bit) today and I'm at my wits end... the guest additions (rc1) are not allowing me to select direct3d even though i have given my VM 265mb Vram and selected 3d acceleration.

Any and all help would be very Appreciated

and to those curious the games i want to play are...

• Baldurs gate 1&2
• NWN 1
Postal 2 (haha get it :| )
• far cry 1&3
• FEAR 1
• obviously space cadet pinball
• marrowwind
• fallout 3
• and more that i can't think of right now because it's one in the morning at time of writing

RC1? Why RC1? The Guest Additions (GAs) should be 6.1.0. In any event, the virtual GPU for WinXP (VBoxVGA) and the VirtualBox Video Driver for WinXP (XPDM), doesn't support 3D acceleration. Your best bet for the moment is to keep using the 6.0.x series.

Programs like these tend to push the physical hardware to their limit hence the strict requirements for the graphics card (GPU) specifications. Virtual machines will never be as powerful as the host, especially on the video side. They use after all a virtual graphics card, not your host's real graphics card. The virtual GPU itself is from around 1995-2000 in terms of capabilities. Applications that have high requirements on the GPU (drawing, 3D, games, video) are expected to not work as good as on the real hardware, if they work at all.

first of all thank you for taking the time to write out an answer
RC1? Why RC1?
i chose RC1 because i didn't notice the "insert Guest additions CD" button... ever ( duhdoy on my part )

for some background info i've never had a need for a windows xp VM since i had a very good windows XP laptop [a Toshiba satellite p105-S6227] however the HDD in it has died and until i get a new one i wanted to use a vm...
They use after all a virtual graphics card, not your host's real graphics card
I thought the Virtual card was only for 2d rendering and used the pc real card for 3d rendering i did not realise

once again thanks for replying to my message... it has made think of ideas for workarounds for GPU passthrough

Don't think too hard; there's none. There was an experimental one for Linux Hosts (with a lot of requirements) but it has been removed with 6.1.0, mainly because it wasn't working.
