Host: Debian sid
Guest: Windows 7 Ultimate

Trying to install the extensions in the guest machine I get the following error message:

FTFY. Please post the whole version number. 6.1.x will cover a lot of .x's soon.
Please zip and post two things in one zip file:
1. A guest vbox.log, showing the guest's operation from cold start, not save-stated, to full running and seeing the problem, to shutdown from within the guest OS, to the guest window disappearing.
2. the guest's .vbox file, found in the guest's folder.
Post the zip file using the forum's Upload Attachment tab.

Let me start by saying that I suspect this VM to be an old one, not a fresh installation, is that true?
samoht wrote:Former installs have always been successful.
There are stricter checks, since 6.0.0beta came out (or was it the trunk?). I have the same issue with an old Win7 VM of mine, that's why I asked about your VM's "age".

I would normally tell you to follow the error message's instructions, but that specific chapter seems to have been vanished from the VirtualBox 6.1.0 documentation altogether!
Here's the related chapter from the "old" 6.0.14 PDF:
12.3.12 Restoring d3d8.dll and d3d9.dll. Of interest is the following:
Note: Starting at Windows 7 the 3D desktop, called Aero, uses DirectX 10 for rendering so that corrupted d3d8.dll and d3d9.dll system files will have no effect on the actual rendering.
That may be true, but the problem is that I can't install the GAs, I get the following 3 error/info/error dialogs:
The setup detected a corrupt/invalid DirectX installation.
In order to get Direct3D support working, consulting the VirtualBox manual is highly recommended.
Continue anyway?
Shall the VirtualBox manual be displayed now to look for a solution?
Could not restore original Direct3D files. Please re-install DirectX.
I had the reply almost ready to go, before your thread "bump", but I wanted to try/verify the procedure first. Never managed to do it, not enough time. Maybe you could...

What happens if you do the following:
- Uninstall current Guest Additions in the guest using Control Panel/Uninstall a program
- Reboot
- Install the new addiitons
This should fix the error. At least it did here.

'sunlover',
Not sure if you were replying to my problem, the problem reported by 'samoht', or both. But I took the chance, couldn't let that pass...
It worked!
I've been struggling with this for quite some time now, but it never bothered me enough to actually deal with it. Duh, should have tried that uninstallation first...

Wait a minute...
YOU had the same problem?

socratis, I replied to the problem reported by 'samoht'
Good to hear that it worked for you.
I was able to reproduce the problem by installing the 6.0 guest additions in safe mode with 'Basic 3D support', rebooting the guest and then trying to install the 6.1 additions.
Probably no one will work on a fix in near future, given that there is a workaround and there are more important issues to be addressed.

Another workaround without having to uninstall the 6.0 Guest Additions would be to invoke the 6.1 Guest Additions installer with the
switch. This should skip the requirements / sanity checking and move the installation forwards.

Thanks to all for sharing experience and hints!
I tried sunlovers and pentagoniks workarounds, to no avail.
Finally I got the error message:
Could not restore Direct3d original files. Please reinstall DirectX

Hi Tom,
I think we found and already fixed the issue -- a bugfix will be available in the next maintenance version and/or a new test build.

Please have a try testing the latest test build 135515 (Development snapshot) whether this fixes the issue for you, which you can get here:

Actually what fixed my problem, with the old Win-7 VM that I've had for ages and started failing when I started using the trunk after 6.0.0 came out, was 6.1.1 r135484, but r135516 works too.

Unfortunately, installing 6.1.1 r135515 did not work either!
Uninstalled GA from my old Win-7-VM, launched it on 6.1.1 r135515 and tried reinstalling the GA.
