Windows XP VM - Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 Game Black Screen

Hello there

First: I'm totally new to this board. I just installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Mac OS X HighSierra as a VM. I just did that to play some old games that I used to play a lot like Westwood's Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 (originally programmed for Win 2000/ME).

The installation went fine. After I started the Game (original CD of course) the screen went black but the games' sound and the Windows mouse were still there. There are a lot of people who are having trouble with that on the web but they are all mainly Windows 7 or 8 users. Since I installed Windows XP I wonder why do I have this problem too and how can I fix that? Any advise???

I gave my Windows VM 10 GB of "HDD space" and 2GB RAM.

Thanks for your attention.

ED

Moving this to "Windows Guests" from "OSX Hosts", the problem that you're having is with your Guest.

We need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe or recreate the problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Keep in mind that programs like these tend to push the physical hardware to their limit hence the strict requirements for the graphics card (GPU) specifications. Virtual machines will never be as powerful as the host, especially on the video side. They use after all a virtual graphics card, not your host's real graphics card. The virtual GPU itself is from around 1995-2000 in terms of capabilities. Applications that have high requirements on the GPU (drawing, 3D, games, video) are expected to not work as good as on the real hardware, if they work at all.

I guess it won't affect my problem If I'd buy some of the over priced programs like Parallels Desktop?

My Mac:
2,9GHt Intel i7
8GB Ram
Intel HD Graphics 40000 1536MB

Cheers,

Not a personal remark, more like a frustration, but why do a lot of people miss this part?

Would that help? Would it convey the message better?

Do not go directly into Full-Screen mode, especially when you don't have 2D/3D enabled, stick to the windowed mode.

Finally, I don't see any sign of the Guest Additions being installed...

Boot your WinXP and as soon as it starts, start hitting the F8 key until the Safe Boot menu shows up. If you miss it keep trying. When it does, boot into Safe Mode.

Then, with the VM window having the focus, go to the host's menu "Devices" » "Insert Guest Additions CD Image...". If not prompted by auto-run, run "VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe" from the CD.

It was not personal, it was just a rant that just happened to "hit" you. Don't sweat it too much... ;)

Please do, test the game, and post a new VBox.log. ZIPPED please... :D
