Windows 7 Guest fine at first, then slows to unusable

Post by Rob215 »

I have a client's computer at my office for testing. His Windows 7 guest works perfectly for hours, but then either locks up or starts being really sluggish, then locks up. I'm looking for any insight into the logs I'm including.

I realize this is a complicated problem to trace. My client is a busy business owner and his computer will sit for hours with a bunch of programs running, while he is out of the office managing his business. But I feel like this is common for many people. I tell people not to leave browsers open with a hundred tabs but no one listens, lol. But read on and you'll see this isn't a "normal" Windows crashing situation...

First, I wanted to create a couple of tests I could reproduce over and over in order to test any suggestions from this forum:

TEST 1:
No applications running in the host other than VirtualBox
  • Windows 7 guest is running in full screen mode and has:
  • Google Chrome running with 25 saved tabs (web sites commonly used by the client)
  • (2) Microsoft Word documents open
  • Windows Task Manager
TEST 2:
  • same as above but using Firefox instead of Google Chrome (the same web sites are used in 25 tabs)
Test Results:
  • Both tests ran fine for at least 18 hours. All windows and tabs remained responsive. Good right?
  • Google Chrome had twice as many processes as Firefox and used 73% of 8GB RAM, compared to 52% used by Firefox (same web sites in all tabs)
  • I thought the culprit would be Chrome but both guest sessions became "unresponsive" between 26 and 30 hours from startup.
  • I say "unresponsive" because I could still move the mouse around the screen, but I could not move, select, or close any windows.
  • Windows Task Manager was in the "Performance" tab and all of the data was still updating and scrolling the graphs, CPU use was low and memory use was as stated earlier. Windows "looked" like it was still running, but I had no keyboard or mouse control (even though I could still move the mouse around the screen)
  • Host key commands did not work and Ctrl-Alt-Del did not work.
Any ideas I can try next? Maybe VirtualBox is slowly using up resources on the host side?

thanks

I am currently running TEST 2 again on the client's machine, with the following changes:
  • Windows 7 guest is running in a 1280x960 window
  • On the Linux host, I have a terminal window open, running top

Okay, so I have the results from the previous test...

Windows 7 guest running in a 1280x960 window:
  • Firefox with 25 tabs open
  • 2 Microsoft Word documents open
  • Windows Task Manger
On the Host:
  • Terminal running Top
As before everything worked fine for 24 hours
  • at around 1 day, 2 hours (26 hours), moving windows around and switching between tabs started to become sluggish (it would take 1-3 full seconds to switch tabs)
  • at 1 day, 6 hours (30 hours), the Windows guest was very sluggish while on the Linux side, everything was still fluid.
  • at 1 day, 8 hours (32 hours), Windows Guest was unresponsive (could not switch tabs, Start menu did not respond), however the Task Manager was still scrolling and did not show any kind of huge CPU use or memory use! I could still move the mouse around the screen but nothing responded to my clicks.
I've included a screenshot (taken with my phone- sorry for the crappy quality) showing what seems to be nothing out of the ordinary. Although I don't know why xorg was using 90.8 cpu.

Since I'm not seeing CPU or memory going to 100% on either the Windows guest or the Linux host, I'm really at a loss why the Windows guest becomes unresponsive after a day of sitting there with 25 browser tabs and a couple of Word documents open, especially when its fine for the first 24 hours.

Anyone have any ideas?

No one has any ideas?

Could it have anything to do with the version of Linux my client is using?
  • are there kernel modules for VirtualBox that work better than others?
  • has anyone noticed anything in the logs? I don't know how to interpret most of the stuff in there.
Maybe this isn't a VirtualBox issue at all, but...
  • the host machine does not slow down or crash if the same 25 tabs are opened in a browser on the host
  • I'm not seeing memory used up on either the host side or the guest side
