[Solved] Can't create 64bit Win VMs, only 32bit VMs, in Linux Mint Mate 19.2 host

Post by Esbeeb »

I've got an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, which is definitely 64-bit. In the BIOS settings, there are no options for enabling or disabling VT-x and AMD-V.

cat /proc/cpuinfo |grep -E "vmx|svm"
...indeed shows "svm" is there.

I've installed Linux Mint MATE 19.2 AMD64, then Virtualbox 6.0.12.

When I try to create a Windows 10 Home 64bit VM, my only choice is 32-bit. And furthermore, that VM can only have 1 of my 12 CPU threads, maximum. The slider bar is greyed out.

BTW: I installed the "Oracle VM Virtualbox Extension Pack" 6.0.12 as well, then restarted Virtualbox, and that didn't help either.

Please go thoroughly through the FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests. Remember that these are just guidelines, you have to use your judgement...

Mind you the tools that you might use to get the CPU info, often show the capability of the CPU, not necessarily the availability...

In My ASUS Gaming mATX Tuf Mobo BIOS, I had to go into:
Advanced -> CPU Configuration -> SVM Mode, change from Disabled to Enable.

Solved!
